About OHOU

A serious institution for human potential.

One Hood One Unicorn is a living network — university, founder lab, workforce center, mentorship system, and community wealth infrastructure — beginning in Detroit.

Why it exists

Valuable knowledge already exists in people and neighborhoods.

What is often missing is access: rooms to enter, people who can teach and build alongside you, modern tools, language for entrepreneurship, relationships, and pathways into opportunity. OHOU exists to close that gap — so knowledge can become agency.

What we believe

  • The human is the first unicorn

A company may come after. Careers, craft, teaching, mentorship, and contribution are valid endings.

  • Access accelerates becoming

Rooms, people, tools, education, and relationships can dramatically change what someone can do.

  • Technology amplifies people

AI is a power tool inside OHOU. It does not admit, place, or replace the first conversation.

  • Hoods connect to Hoods

One institution. Many places. Detroit first. The digital layer expands the human campus — it never replaces it.

How it works

From conversation to transformation.

  1. 01

Join — share who you are and what you carry.

  2. 02

Human Connection Request — choose how you want to meet.

  3. 03

Real conversation — staff reviews your story, then talks with you.

  4. 04

Routing — Hood, program, coaches, mentors, resources.

  5. 05

Build Room — only if you are building something.

  6. 06

Passport & impact — track what you learned, built, contributed, and changed.

Inside the institution, members use My Hood — people, program, schedule, learning, resources, help, Passport, progress, and contributions. Staff operate through the Operator Console. The public site and the platform are one institution.

Origin

Why OHOU was built — Preston's chapter.

Preston entered entrepreneurship ecosystems without the inherited vocabulary — VC, MVP, ICP, cap tables, pitch decks. The words were foreign. The ambition was not.

What changed him was access: rooms he could enter, modern technology he could use, people who would build and teach beside him, relationships that opened doors, and the chance to learn by making things.

That experience made one belief undeniable: access, relationships, tools, education, and opportunity can dramatically accelerate what another human being can become.

How do we institutionalize that access for other people?

OHOU is the answer to that question — an institution larger than any one founder story. The camera returns to the people OHOU serves.

The people we serve

OHOU is about what becomes possible for them.

Youth. Workers with deep industry knowledge. Parents and caregivers. Second-chance participants. Lived-experience builders. People who want to learn, earn, help, or create. Founding Five begins with five very different human starting points.

Answers

What OHOU is, in plain language.

What is One Hood One Unicorn?

One Hood One Unicorn is a living network — university, founder lab, workforce center, mentorship system, and community wealth infrastructure — beginning in Detroit. The institution is the One Hood One Unicorn Foundation. OHOU is its working name.

What is OHOU?

OHOU helps people turn skills, ideas, lived experience, and knowledge into real opportunities. The belief underneath it is simple: every neighborhood deserves a path to ownership.

What is MADE?

MADE is a four-week, sixteen-day experience. The name is Meaning, Aim, Develop, Execute. You bring the idea. The point is to leave with proof.

Who is MADE for?

MADE starts where you are. It is for young people, working adults, parents, factory and industry workers, returning citizens, creators, career changers, older adults carrying decades of knowledge, people with lived experience around a problem, people who already have a small business, and people who have never called themselves a founder.

How does the four-week experience work?

Week 1, Clarity, gives the problem or idea a direction. Week 2, Understanding, is customer discovery: better questions, alternatives, and evidence. Week 3, Structure, shapes the offer and decides what should be built first. Week 4, Execution, sets targets and dates and puts the work in front of people.

What does someone leave MADE with?

You do not finish MADE because you sat through four weeks. You finish because something that was in your head now exists in the world. OHOU does not publish invented graduate counts or outcome statistics.

How do I join OHOU?

Request a conversation. After the join form, the next step is a real conversation with a person. Signing in does not create membership by itself.

Is OHOU only for tech founders?

No. A company may come after. Careers, craft, teaching, mentorship, and contribution are valid endings. People can come to learn, earn, help, or create.

How does OHOU support Detroit?

Detroit is the first Local Hood, and it is live. People can begin online and then meet a human. The site connects the Hood. It does not replace it.

How is AI used inside OHOU?

AI is a power tool inside OHOU. Ask OHOU can advise a signed-in participant inside My Hood. It does not admit, place, or replace the first conversation.
